Ripon

Below are some of our suggestions for things to do in Ripon.

Weekly Markets

Every Thursday a bustling market fills the square. Buy local fruit, vegetables, pastries and meats, or wander around the surrounding shops.

The Hornblower

Every night at 9pm, for the last over 1000 years, the Ripon Hornblower blows his horn at each of the four corners of the market square. He gives a short speech explaining the history of his role, and if you’re lucky, he’ll give you a wooden penny to remember the experience by.

Fountains Abbey

Fountains Abbey is a National Trust property. It offers a range of activities to do and is perfect for both couples and children. The property comprises of the ruin of an ancient Abbey and a Victorian Water Garden which has been designated as a World Heritage site. The site also hosts a deer park, large lake, two cafes and a restaurant. In December, the Abbey is transformed by spectacular lighting and hosts local choirs with pulled pork sandwiches and mulled wine available from outside the restaurant.

Ripon Cathedral

The Cathedral is just a short walk from the market square. Built in the 7th century, it features stunning architecture, stained glass windows and stone sculptures.
